Good news! Finally, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee included St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, and the ensemble of the historical center of Lviv to the list of world heritage, which is under threat.
UNESCO believes, "that these objects are in danger against the background of the war in connection with the shelling of Kyiv and Lviv".
“Besides the risk of a direct hit, these objects are vulnerable to shock waves, caused by the bombing of other cities", the committee recognized.
Adding cultural monuments to the list will remind UN member states of their responsibility to contribute to the protection of these objects, noted in the committee.
This step will facilitate financial and technical assistance from states.
There are priceless treasures in the world, which are not only material objects, but also memories of the past, cultural heritage and a source of historical knowledge. To preserve these unique treasures for future generations, UNESCO has created a list of world heritage. However, unfortunately, many of these facilities face various threats, and in this context, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee made an important decision.
At its last session, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee added three important objects in Ukraine to the list of world heritage: Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the historical center of Lviv. This decision is a recognition of the importance of these sites for world heritage and an attempt to take into account their extraordinary historical and cultural value.
Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv
Sophia Cathedral – it is one of the most outstanding monuments of Ukrainian architecture and art. The construction of the cathedral began in the 11th century, and it became a symbol of the prosperity of Kyiv as a city-state. The cathedral impresses with its architectural harmony and rich decoration, and its walls hide unique frescoes and mosaics, which are the most valuable monuments of medieval art.
But, Sophia Cathedral became the object of important restoration works, and its condition has always been threatened by the influence of time and natural factors. The cathedral's inclusion in the World Heritage List emphasizes its importance and is intended to provide additional protection and funding for its preservation.
Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra – it is one of the most significant monasteries of Ukraine and the entire Orthodox world. Founded in the 11th century, it is a symbol of the spiritual wealth and cultural heritage of Ukraine. Lavra is known for its architectural beauty, as well as shrines, which are stored in her caves. The cult objects and religious heritage of the Lavra are extremely important for believers and historians.
The historical center of Lviv
The historical center of Lviv – this is a real treasure of Ukraine. This is a city, which has preserved its architectural heritage from various historical eras, including the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The streets of Lviv are full of architectural masterpieces, and Rynok Square is recognized as one of the most beautiful in the world. However, the historical center of Lviv has always been under threat due to instability and wars in the region.
Including the Sophia Cathedral, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the historical center of Lviv to the UNESCO World Heritage List is a step forward in the preservation of these extremely valuable objects. This is a recognition of their importance to the whole world and the obligation of the community to do everything possible to preserve them and protect them from any threats. The national and international community must unite for this, to ensure, that these objects will remain intact for future generations.
