Documenting reality through the lens of World Press Photo 2026

Yaroslav Bystrushkin

I meet and talk with colleagues in Rome — against the background of the photo "Russians attacked Kyiv" by Yevhen Maloletka, which became one of the winning works of the competition World Press Photo 2026.

Wonderful people, a strong professional atmosphere and an incredible exhibition space — but the context of the event remains deeply tragic. He reminds about the price, which the world continues to pay for documenting reality. War, unleashed and continuously supported by the Russian regime, and in the future remains an open wound of Europe and the whole world.

Exhibition at Exhibition Palace Rome represents works 42 distinguished photographers. The annual exposition deepens the understanding of the complexity of the modern world, showcasing the strongest examples of documentary photography and photojournalism of the year.

Contest winners World Press Photo 2026 was chosen by an independent jury from 31 professionals from all over the world among 57 376 photos, submitted 3 747 photographers from 141 country.
