Action "Man Eater" in Venice: reaction of Ukrainian artists to the return of Russia to the cultural space

Yaroslav Bystrushkin

9- May 10 in Venice, during opening Venice Biennale, Ukrainian artists and activists implemented the art campaign "Cannibal" (Cannibal). The project was a response to Russia's return to the international cultural space despite the ongoing war against Ukraine.

In various locations of the city, a work with the image of Putin in the form of a cannibal, a symbol of the regime, was placed, which destroys people, cities, culture and humanity itself. The action was a reaction to attempts to re-present Russia as a "normal" participant in the world cultural process.

The organizers emphasize, that art does not exist outside of politics, especially during a great war. In their opinion, the Russian pavilion today is not only about culture or creativity, and about the attempt to conduct a "cultural offensive", bringing back a sense of normalcy there through art, where daily killings continue, destruction and destruction of Ukrainian heritage.

"Man-eater" became not only an artistic gesture, but also by a public position — a refusal to remain silent at the moment, when they try to make evil acceptable again.

The project was implemented by the team Save Art in Ukraine in cooperation with the author of the work Kazper Piskorowski.
